Norwegian concern over Ethiopian Assault

Mar8/3 /2012

Meles Zenawi was listening but rejected the Norwegin critism of his meeting with prime minister jens stoltenberg in Oslo

The increase in the number of arrests of opposition figures in Ethiopia in recent months makes the Norwegian authorities concerned. The regime is becoming more and more aut

The Norwegian Embassy in Addis Ababa expressed concern over the human rights situation in Ethiopia. Over the past months, the embassy sent several reports of concern back to the Foreign Ministry of arrests of dissidents.

Among those arrested, according to Human Rights Watch, more than 200 people from the Oromo ethnic group. BBC reports that 35 people were arrested in April accused of coup attempt. Two Swedish journalists were arrested in July. In August, two members of two opposition parties were arrested after meeting representatives of Amnesty International, then another opposition member. This past year a large number of local journalists have been arrested. Rejects “interference”

This is probably one of the reasons that Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg expressed concern over the human rights situation in a meeting with his Ethiopian colleague Meles Zenawi in Oslo on 10 October. According to the Foreign Ministry was the arrest of two Swedish journalists Schibbye Martin and Johan Persson, and accusations of murder and mistreatment of civilians in Ogaden, among the topics of conversation.   Ethiopia’s long-standing head of state makes it on the other hand clear that Norway has no right to interfere in its internal affairs. It is evident from an interview with Aftenposten.   – Norwegian and other countries’ organizations believe that they have the right to engage in the African country’s politics. While I have not, an Ethiopian, a right to interfere in Norwegian cases. We have never accepted this double standard, stated Zenawi.   He stressed that the country often received financial assistance, but that it was unacceptable to accept any interference in the country’s own political processes. Disturbing

According to the magazine The Economist’s Democracy Index from 2010 Ethiopia holds a small glorious 118-space of 167 countries. The country’s government is characterized now as an authoritarian regime. Ethiopia has dropped thirteen places in the rankings since 2006. At that time the country was considered a democracy.   The reason that the country valleys on the list is that the Ethiopian regime has introduced restrictive laws that limit media and civil society’s freedom. In addition, Mr. Zenawi Meles regime struck down on opposition activities, media and civil society ahead of the elections in 2010.   The arrests that occurred in conjunction with Amnesty International visits denotes the Norwegian Embassy in Addis Ababa as disturbing. It appears from an internal report from the embassy that has Bistandsaktuelt had access to.   Many of the arrests are justified on terrorism charges, according to the embassy. Norway has recently taken over leadership of the donor group on human rights in Ethiopia. More and more authoritarian

Researcher at the Christian Michelsen Institute in Bergen, Lovise Aalen, said the arrest wave must be considered together with the fact that Ethiopia is in the authoritarian direction. This is a trend we have seen since the great riots around the election in 2005.   – These arrests are a continuation and reinforcement of the events after the elections in 2005, said Aalen.   Aalen think it is about preventing the opposition from winning out.   – Ethiopian authorities use the terrorist act that came after the election in 2005 as an excuse to arrest people who can be accused of any connection to the organizations designated as terrorist organizations, she said.   According Aalen authorities operate with a very broad definition of terrorism. She believes that it is unlikely that any of these groups have planned specific terrorist acts.   – The new discovery is perhaps the more prominent people, journalist Eskinder Nega and the two Swedish journalists are arrested. This has a strong signal effect that “we do not tolerate opposition,” says Lovise Aalen.   But this has gone in waves since 2005, the Ethiopian government has gradually tightened its grip more and more, she concludes.   Norway gave in 2010 in excess of 196 million in aid to Ethiopia

horitarian, says a researcher

Mamo 02/02/2012 2:58 No AID

kebu 30/01/2012 11:37 on return, where authorities are happy

Zelalem Woyesaposted toEthiopian Asylum Seekers The class struggle written in ¨ a holocaustdag I read in the class struggle, Wednesday 25, January 4744 was forced to return in 2011 1812 left voluntarily will return more face signature Congratulations: In the foreground we see the state secretary Paul Lønseth (AP) Congratulations to the UDI director IDA Borresen with record high return numbers during a press conference yesterday This grtulerer you then have to, and leads the government’s bragging list. 4744 It is 6 times as many people as the Jews who were deported during the war. No one knows what happens to them after the. There is no follow-up. Checking not know how it goes with them! There is no, statistics on what happens to forcibly returned. They disappear from the Norwegian perspective. It is a convention against forced disappearances” International Convention for the protection of all persons from Enforced disappearance”

Article. 1.2: No exceptional Circumstances whatsoever, weather a state of war or a threat of war, international political instability or any Other public emergency, may be invoked as a justification for enforced disappearance. Article 2

For the purpose of this convention, ‘enforced disappearance’ is Considered to be the arrest, detention, abduction or any Other from of deprivation of liberty by agents of the state or by persons or groups of persons acting with the Authorization, support or acquiescence of the state, Followed by a Refusal to knowledge the deprivation of liberty or by Concealment of the Whereabouts or fate of the disappeared person, Which place such a person outside the protection of law.

I’m not saying that all deportation is enforced disappearances. However, many of which are located very close to the definition in Article 2 And when it comes to mass deportations by charter flights, as we several times have been presented on television and other media, so similar to those Marseille, one is skrter of it. It is as if one were to brag about and have the objective of older policies, namely, how many seniors they could dispatch out of the great nursing homes, to where they belong, or equivalent helsepolitik measures, or measures against tyskertøsene …. The last it was actually similar measures against. Worse yet is that it shows a tendency to seek solutions. we read the same newspaper:” I have never before been so positive in terms of a return agreement with Ethiopia, said Paul statssekrettær Lønseth (AP) under pressekoneransen yesterday,” The next day, ie 26.01.2012 came the news release from the Justice and Emergency Department: Return ENTERED INTO Agreement between Norway and Ethiopia. press release shows the picture of the agreement was signed with big smiles and handshakes. We can not count the cost. but we have the first feedback from the goods in this trade. A omsorgesperson from an enhanced reception about telling her mother the dispatch will not be able to take care of their child. A child who said that “there is no good oppveskstmilijo when we are afraid” a father who was in a spin because he must leave his child. a new mother who was in a spin because he must leave his child. a new mother who used the phrase” that they will sell us” Yes. It is about a trade between the States, on which mennesker.Det spesilelt, the people in this trade will be traded with a negative value And you complained about the prime minister deportation of Jews during the war.

Sincerely, For Consulting Group in Trondheim.

Even Those, the comments come after longtime saliency it is great to read such comment from the Norwegian diplomatic agents. Bayissa 25/10/2011 11:11 p.m. Never use the dictator’s regime and Meles Zenawi with Norway Money

That is correct. The truth began to come forward. Norwegian People give their money for the Ethiopian people. But the dictator government use the money for political affairs in the name of democracy. After complaints and comments people of something, they are taken prision in terrorist action now. Many Oromo man boxes are in jail now. I strongly believe that Nordman does not want his money goes to the cruel dictator like Meles Zenawi.

Johnsen 25/10/2011 2:18 p.m. Who can answer?

I wish that the Norwegian people to know how aid money is spent. Has it led to some development in rural areas for example.? Or the money will be distributed only in a small group?

Mulualem 25/10/2011 10:32 Totalitarian

Yes, the regime is totalitarian, Particularly after the 2005. A number of International Organizations garden documented evidences testifying the negative social and political Situations in Ethiopia. However, the west (thought to be the mother of democracy and good governance) is indifferent to the reports. Encouraging and supporting a totalitarian regime, promoting a single-party rule (99.0% win in 2010) with non existent freedom of speech and protest (basic human rights) is morally unacceptable.

Recent comments from the Genocide Watch and non-Ethiopian scholars are very alarming. Refer to http://www.ethiomedia.com/broad/3033.html http://www.ethiomedia.com/broad/3008.html

Countries like Norway Hubble properly understand what the situation in Ethiopia may be in a very short perespective and work towards averting devastation as we wittness in Somalia not repeat in Ethiopia.Although it is really lazy, it is such a positive commentary is REFLECTED in Norwegian media .

Sena 25/10/2011 0:01 Very little is said and pretend about Atrocities committed by a tyrany Zenawi

The TPLF-EPRDF Leader has cheated the International Comunity by historically false and democracy rethoric and propaganda for many years. But even though now this Comunity lately has started two realize some of the Evils of this despotic leader. Still there are many tenth of thouthends of Ethiopian people Specially Ethnic Oromo suffering Suffer and two in the jails of the actual TPLF-Government. Tyrant Meles is an arogant and fasicst That  kills, arrests, intimidates and send to exile by historical securty machinaries Oromo children from two elders, from elementary to University students, from two farmers Profesor etc. He has made Specially the Oromo; Which is the single largest ethnic group in East Africa and Ethiopia out of the economic and political scenario in the country. The Atrocities commiting the Meles’ regime Wed individul or any group not submissive two its rule, is being more and severe with time. Is clear for every body That this criminal regime would not be strong without the financial and Other types of AIDS from the donor countries in the name of the ethiopian people. These aids are used two Increase the suffering of the same people for Which the AIDS suposed two reach. In order two aliviate this burden, countries support this ditatorial That regime has two positions with democracy and the people and stand against the Dictator. Long live two Democracy! Thank you! Girma 24/10/2011 1:06 Zenawi’s manipulative approach

His old manipulative approach When Answering Questions from western journalist. He is Becoming even more and more arrogant, he pretend as nationalist When he is questioned about the arrest and killings of ethiopian poeple. I was just an elementery school boy When he cames two power, and I never forget attacks on innocent Oromo bussiness but equally Darara Kefeni, Oromo elders and students. Who can tell Meles Zenawi the fact That Oromo farmers were fighting the Italian two keep Ethiopia free from colony, WHEN FATHER historical banda Zenawi was fighting ehthiopia. Thousands of Oromo farmers being displaced from Their ONLY HOME LAND GRAB Because of that owes much more to Ethiopia not being colonized than Zenawi is claiming. IT WAS NOT THAT IN HISTORY Frequent THAT ANY COLONIAL POWER DISPLACING poeple FROM THEIR OWN HOME AND THEIR COUNTRY Selling NOTHING. Meles is playing game against His own poor poeple, instead of leading two restriction better life. He is warning NORWAY not mess up, huh historical brass up lifes of our brothers and sisters back home.

I am happy When I saw Thise report becouse it is reality. Norwagian Government always said Ethiopia economy is growing and there are Democratic governement in Ethiopia and so on but the fact is not that. Melese Zenawe – killed and systematically eliminated all of His opponents and made himself the one and only – Made Ethiopia a land locked country – Divided the Ethiopian people across ethnicity lines – Printed Birr as much that he needs and led to> 150% Inflation in 5 years – Hundreds of Thousands of Ethiopian died in unnecessary wars in Somalia and Yemen (during the Eritria-Yemen conflict) – Genocide committed against the people of Ogaden and Game Bella – No self-food sufficiency after 21 years of rule but 8 Billion of dollars left the country and 15 millions of people are starving every year (both under the saftey-net and food aid) – … (I DO NOT HAVE THE WHOLE DAY TO LIST THE CRIME OF THIS GUY!) All Ethiopian people are in silent becouse of fear but Thise silent is not a sign of peace. Thise one day silence and remove all things are change. In this article apprecate writer In blessed Norway and Ethiopia.

Ghidey Zeratsion 10/23/2011 12:26 The dictator Meles can not be a partner!

It is nice to hear some Critics from the Norwegian embassy in Ethiopia. It is a documented fact That The Meles regime is a dictator ship from its inception. But it was very much vivid after the 2005 election fraud. The winners of the election were put behind jails and peaceful protetsters were mascared as a result. The reaction from the international community was Insignificant and the west Including Norway Continued Their business as usuall with the dictator. The Development since simply are going worse as mentioned in this article. The Norwegian embassy in Addis was acting as public relations agent for the Meles regime, the last three years. It is good news two hear That it has come to its senses now.
