Tirunesh Dibaba wins the first track gold of the London Games

Awramba Times (Washington DC) —  Ethiopian long distance track athlete and the outdoor 5000 meters world record holder, Tirunesh Dibaba  surged away from 600 meters out to win the 10,000 meters at the London Games and defend her Olympic title with a dominant display giving her rivals little chance on a stunning final lap.

Tirunesh Dibaba, who clinched the first women’s long-distance Olympic double in Beijing four years ago by winning the 5,000 and 10,000 events, collected the first track gold of the London Games in a time of 30 minutes, 20.75 seconds. Dibaba’s triumph was her third Olympic gold after winning both the 5,000m and 10,000m in Beijing – the first female athlete to do so.

Brendan Foster, Olympic bronze medallist and BBC athletics commentator says “Ethiopia has every reason to celebrate. She becomes the seventh athlete from the country to win three individual gold medals. It was a fantastic performance, a brilliant run. You know what? She might have another in a few days time. This is the great Tirunesh Dibaba.”
